Summary
This fire was one of the
largest in the history of the
Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness
Area. It was located in an area
where, one of the largest blow
downs in the history of the
United States occurred. Forest
officials worked closely with
cooperators in m
itigating the
potential for a huge wildfire
along the Gunflint Trail
corridor which is home to
hundreds of residents and
outfitters. Roughly half of the
area identified has been treated
using mechanical treatment and
prescribed fire. These areas
proved to be one of the major
cards in fighting this fire.
Once the wildfire reached these
areas, fire behavior greatly
decreased and crews were able to
get a handle on it.
